What the research suggests

What research says about kids and martial arts.

Ages 6–12 are when habits around attention, effort, and behavior take shape. Structured martial arts gives kids a place to practice those habits with clear goals and steady coaching.

  • Research on school-age martial arts training has found gains in self-regulation—the ability to manage attention, emotions, and behavior (Lakes & Hoyt, 2004).
  • A classroom study of Taekwondo for ages 7–11 linked training to better teacher-rated self-regulation and related classroom behaviors (Cui et al., 2022).
  • A broader review of Taekwondo training reported positive links to character, etiquette, social skills, and school-life adjustment (Kim et al., 2021).

In plain words: When teaching emphasizes respect, effort, and self-control—not winning at all costs—kids get repeated practice in the habits that help them listen, try hard, and treat others well. Results vary by child; an intro class helps you see the fit.
