What Fudoshin means

An immovable mind for training—and for life.

Fudoshin is a Japanese term often translated as “immovable mind.” At Fudoshin Martial Arts in Plymouth, that means learning to stay calm, focused, and steady when something is difficult—on the mat and in everyday life.

Students train karate skills while building habits that support long-term progress: focus, respect, self-control, confidence, and perseverance. Classes are designed for kids, teens, and adults who want purposeful training in a supportive school environment.

Matthew Lindahl is the owner and instructor at Fudoshin Martial Arts in Plymouth. He began karate training in 1994 with his father under Master Kerry Kruckow. In 2002 he earned his first-degree black belt and began teaching part-time under Master David Younglove, Grand Master Gordon Franks, and Grand Master Pat Worley.

Matthew’s early black-belt teaching years were guided in part by Master David Younglove within the Twin Cities USA Karate tradition.

He promoted his first students to black belt in 2006, earned his fourth-degree black belt in 2011, and later served in the United States Army—including work as a certified Army Combatives instructor and a deployment to Afghanistan. After completing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2018, he opened Fudoshin Martial Arts (KarateMN) in 2023.

Lineage

A Twin Cities teaching tradition.

Grand Masters Gordon Franks and Pat Worley—co-founders of USA Karate in Minnesota—are part of the instructional lineage that shaped Fudoshin’s black-belt teaching standards. Franks, a former PKA world champion in full-contact karate, and Worley, a nationally recognized competitor and instructor, guided Matthew’s advanced rank and early promotions of students to black belt.
